  About the Region

The Southland region encompasses more than 80 communities and 2.5 million citizens – roughly the size of San Francisco.  The region was once home to many industrial and manufacturing jobs, but has experienced significant job loss during the past few decades.

 Regional Statistics

The region is in need of economic revitalization, as unemployment is approaching 10% (several communities are experiencing unemployment above 25%).  Median household income for the region is around $39,000, with the poorest communities in the range of $18,000 annually.  Roughly 13% of citizens over the age of 25 have bachelor’s degrees or higher.  The Southland is a wonderful place to live and raise families, but is still in need of development and economic stimulus.
